More than half of the world’s population still lacks access to essential health services and over 2.1 billion people face financial hardship when paying for health care out of their own pockets, often at the expense of other essentials such as food, education or housing.
Closing a three-year campaign series focused on financial protection, the 2026 UHC Day campaign calls on governments to take immediate action to remove barriers to care, meet people’s health needs and protect them from unaffordable health costs.
Engage in the campaign to advocate for universal health coverage and hold decision-makers to account for their global commitments.
UHC Day on 12 December is the global rallying point to advocate for hundreds of millions of people still waiting for access to affordable health care, call on leaders to make smarter investments in health. It serves as a powerful reminder of the urgent need to achieve universal health coverage (UHC). It is an official United Nations-designated observance, marking the anniversary of the unanimous endorsement of UHC in 2012 as an essential priority for international development.
